DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - The UMD football team kicked off their season this past Thursday with a win over Southwest Minnesota State and it sure felt a lot like a game from last year.

The Bulldogs were able to do it all in the 31-21 victory. Solid defense, a good run game and great passing game, Just like last year. What was also similar, was another quarterback injury. Garrett Olson got the starting nod for the dogs but got hurt early, and that meant Logan Graetz was back under center. It was a similar role for Graetz last season, which he thrived in and he did the same against the Mustangs, throwing for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Head coach Curst Wiese said, “We would be a lot more comfortable if we could always stay healthy at the qb position but I thought Logan Graetz did a great job coming in. Logan faced some adversity through not named the starter and I was very proud of the way he handled things. Not having his head down on Thursday night, still preparing like he is going to play and six plays into the game, he was our starting quarterback, so he played extremely well.”

Graetz added, “I think it all came down to experience ya know. I was able to get some experience last year after john got hurt and I say that played a big role. I was confident these guys around me trust me from last year, I was ready to go.”

We are still waiting to see who will get the starting nod at quarterback come Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Mankato for a showdown with rival, Minnesota State.
