A Sensory-Free Day Out with Thomas the Tank Engine Thursday
DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - -- A special celebration at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum Thursday.
The North Shore Scenic Railroad hosted a sensory-free day with Thomas the Tank Engine.
The event includes all the fun of Thomas, but without the large crowds and loud noises.
According to organizers, Autism Speaks worked with the railroad and local officials to design the original event several years ago and train staff and volunteers.
According to Duluth Mayor Emily Larson, it’s important to create events that all families can enjoy.
“We work so hard to be a community of special experiences for all families, for all people, because we know that these kinds of family memories are the things that guide us through the tough times that are ahead,” said Mayor Larson.
The North Shore Scenic Railroad held the first Thomas event that offered a sensory-friendly day.
Organizers said the special celebrations have expanded to many cities around the country.
