Authorities identify mom, child killed in Ashland crash involving state senator
ASHLAND, WI -- Authorities have identified the mom and child killed in a crash in Ashland Friday afternoon.
According to the Ashland Police Department, the crash happened around 12:30 p.m. near U.S. Highway 2 and Lakeshore Drive near Turner Road.
Authorities say State Senator Janet Bewley, 70, of Mason, pulled out of the entrance of Maslowski Beach to turn east onto Highway 2.
Police say her vehicle collided with another vehicle heading west on Highway 2, which was driven by Alyssa Ortman, 27, of Clearfield, Pennsylvania.
Ortman’s vehicle then spun across the highway and was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by Jodi Munson, 45, of Mason.
Ortman was taken to Memorial Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.
Her 5-year-old daughter died at the scene.
Ashland Police Bewley and Munson were not hurt.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to police.

Senator Bewley was involved in a three-vehicle accident in Ashland, Wisconsin on Friday, July 22nd. Tragically, two people lost their lives. This is a heartbreaking event for the community. Our thoughts and prayers are focused on the individuals involved, their families and their loved ones. Senator Bewley, who was not seriously injured in the accident, wants to thank all the dedicated law enforcement and emergency medical personnel who helped in the aftermath of the accident. A police investigation is ongoing. Out of respect for that investigation and the privacy of all the families involved, our office will be withholding further comment at this time. Thank you for your patience and concern.
ASHLAND, WI -- Highway 2 just west of Ashland is closed Friday evening after a deadly crash.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the crash happened earlier in the afternoon.
Highway 2 is closed between Ashland and Highway 13.
Traffic is being sent through an alternate route.
The La Pointe Police Department confirmed at least one person died in the crash.
