DPD: Free kits to help prevent catalytic converter thefts

DULUTH, MN-- Duluth Police are determined to minimize the rate of catalytic converter thefts in the city.

Minnesota has one of the highest theft rates for the highly sought after car metal in the nation.

“Catalytic converters continue to be stolen because they contain precious metals worth up to $1,600 and this is a simple thing we can do to deter criminals and reduce theft,” said Investigator Cekalla.

Duluth community members can get a free “identification label kit” that tracks and deters thieves from stealing catalytic converters.

Each kit has an identification label officials can trace to the VIN of your vehicle.

110 free kits are available at the Public Safety Building.

Kits must be registered when you pick it up.

It’s on a first come first serve basis, remember your VIN and license plate number to register.

These auto body shops include Kenwood Muffler and Brake (1508 Kenwood Avenue), 4th Street Auto (1118 E 4th St), Thompson’s T-Express (210 S 27th Ave W), and Allstar Service Center (329 E Central Entrance).
