DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - The Cloquet boys golf team will have a chance to defend their state championship.

The Lumberjacks cruised to a section 7AA title, behind a strong performance from junior Karson Patten. They were 44 strokes ahead of the next closes boys team, which was Mora.

“They really came through, they did what they needed to do to put up some pretty respectable scores with the conditions, and now we go down and see what we can do at state,” said Aaron Young, the Cloquet boys golf coach.

Sophomore Anders Gunelson also put together a strong performance, four strokes back in second place.

The Mesabi East girls are also heading to state, after holding off a strong push by Hermantown. They claimed the section 7AA title by seven strokes, lead by Maggie Lamppa who took third.

“I think we battled, we had some tough conditions on Tuesday with some wind and rain, and we just kept on fighting, and just kept on saying one stroke at a time here, your next shot is probably the most important,” said Steve Grams, the Mesabi East girls golf coach.

International Falls sophomore Kelby Anderson took first place in the girls meet, qualifying individually for the state meet.
