DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - In a battle of Twin Ports area softball powerhouses, Superior shut out Proctor.

Both sides went with their junior ace pitchers in the circle, Maddy Walsh for the Rails and Haley Zembo for the Spartans.

Superior played with the lead to open the game via an Emma Raye two-run home run. They threatened to score even more, but Walsh pitched around a one-out jam to limit the damage.

Zembo was nearly perfect on the afternoon, recording 16 strikeouts. She did not officially allow a hit, depending on which scoring book you choose to acknowledge.

In the fifth inning, Walsh hit a sharp grounder to short stop which was bobbled, and eventually overthrown at first base. Walsh advanced to second, but did not end up scoring on the play.

Proctor’s scorekeeper (the home team) ruled the play an infield single, as Walsh was quick down the line and would have likely been safe regardless of a better throw. Superior ruled the play an error, citing both the fielding bobble and overthrow on the play.

Later in the game, Avery Visger would add another two-run home run for the Spartans to help seal the victory. The 5-0 final was Proctor’s first loss of the season, dropping them to 16-1. Superior improves to 15-2 on the season and will finish their regular season schedule with two more undefeated teams in Bloomer and Grantsburg (WI).
