CLOQUET, MN. (KBJR) - Despite the wintery weather, Wednesday marked an annual spring tradition in Cloquet, opening day for Gordy’s Hi-Hat.

For the family-owned burger joint, it’s an annual, long-standing tradition.

“Today is the first day of our 62nd season, my grandparents opened the place in 1960. My dad and I still own and operate the place today,” said Sever Lundquist, Gordy’s Grandson and current owner.

According to Lundquist, people couldn’t wait to come in the doors for their favorite treats.

“We had a handful of customers lined up at about 9:00 this morning, we ended up opening about half an hour early,” said Lundquist.

Lundquist said they’re famous for their burgers, fries, and shakes.

Although Wednesday was the official opening day, it wasn’t the first time this season Gordy’s served some meals.

The day before opening, the burger joint decided to treat some local frontline workers to lunch.

“This year we decided to feed all the teachers in the Cloquet school system,” said Lundquist.

“The whole staff said yippee, we don’t have to bring a lunch to school,” said Ashlee Lennartson, a first-grade teacher at Churchill Elementary School.

According to Lennartson, the staff was beyond thankful for the meal.

“This just meant a lot to our staff, to feel like we were appreciated in our community,” said Lennartson.

And the lunch from Gordy’s received the highest honor a teacher can give.

“I ended up having a burger and a banana shake, and I will say, both get an A-plus grade,” said Lennartson.

According to Lundquist, Gordy’s fed teachers and staff at Cloquet’s elementary schools this week.

They plan on feeding workers at Cloquet’s middle and high schools, along with schools on the Fond du Lac reservation in the coming weeks.
