Ely mayor, Bigfork man announce run for Minnesota House seat
MINNESOTA-- Ely’s mayor Roger Skraba and Blain Johnson of Bigfork announced their candidacy for Minnesota’s House of Representative’s District 3A seat Monday.
Roger Skraba, 60, born and raised in Ely, is currently the Chairman of St. Louis County Planning Commission, President of Club Mesabi and the Trail Administrator for the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Clubs Grant in Aid Trails.
“It’s time that an elected conservative voice is heard from northeastern Minnesota at the State Capitol. The DFL of my parents and grandparents generations has left us and has been replaced by far left extremists. I want to bring representation to those they left,” said Skraba.
Johnson, who currently lives in Bigfork, serves as the Vice-President of the Association of Minnesota Emergency Managers as well as on the legislative sub-committee.
“I want to reconnect state leaders with the issues and concerns of Northern Minnesota. We must
develop and improve support for local small businesses as well as the region’s larger industries to help them thrive. We must promote visitors and tourism which has also been a large factor in our local economy, while also maintaining the rich history of landowner rights and stewardship. And we must also ensure local public safety agencies have the personnel and resources necessary to protect local citizens and keep our community safe. Our District has been plagued by stagnant ideas coupled with a lack of local leadership, and I believe we must get working on progressive solutions to meet our immediate concerns, while simultaneously protecting individual rights and freedoms”, Johnson said.
Johnson and Skraba are seeking the Republican endorsement.
Rep. Rob Ecklund, a DFL’er, currently holds this seat and plans to run again.
