CLOQUET, MN. (KBJR) - Accusations of child abuse in a Cloquet foster home are causing an outcry in the community.

It started after a family posted pictures and videos on Facebook which they say showed children being abused by their foster parents.

The children and foster parents are members of the Native community.

The family called on people to report the abuse to police.

Cloquet Police Chief Derek Randall issued a statement, saying his department is actively investigating the complaints.

“We currently have active investigations open on the cases. We’re working with the Carlton County Attorney’s Office, Carlton County Human Services, and the Fond du Lac Reservation resources to address the complaints.

Unfortunately, because these are active cases involving juveniles and child protection issues, we cannot comment or respond further due to data practice laws.

More information will be made available when it’s known and if we can do so.

The Cloquet Police Department and the assisting agencies take all complaints and allegations regarding the safety of others seriously. We will continue to follow all appropriate protocols and laws to ensure our community members are safe,” said Randall in his statement.

The Fond du Lac Band also issued a statement, saying the safety of its members, especially children, is of utmost importance.

“The Band is working closely with Carlton County to conduct a thorough investigation. The case is under the jurisdiction of Carlton County so the Band is actively advocating for appropriate steps to be taken by the County to protect all children and support the family. Given the sensitivity of the situation and respect for the families involved, we urge people to please not post information on social media that could construed as harmful to the family and children or violate their privacy as the investigation continues,” said Band representatives in their statement.

KBJR 6 is not naming the people involved to protect the identity of the children and because charges have not been filed.

We’ll continue following the investigation and bring you updates when they’re available.
