Scott Sandelin talks matchup with son Ryan, top ranked Minnesota State
DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - The UMD men’s hockey team is returning from their holiday break with yet another tough matchup.
The sixth-ranked Bulldogs will play a home-and-home series against number one Minnesota State. The Mavericks are led by a group of experienced defenseman, goaltender Dryden McKay, and a forward group that features Scott Sandelin’s son Ryan.
Sandelin leads MSU with 12 goals and has posted career highs in assists and points so far in his junior season.
“He’s playing very well for them, he’s playing consistently. Certainly, as a dad, I’m happy for him, but I just told him to take it easy on us,” said Scott. “He’s having a good year, and he’s a bigger part of their team than maybe his first couple years. That’s good, and that’s how he is. I’ve watched him get better in little increments every year, from when he was younger, and this is no different in college for him.”
It’s not the first time that Scott and Ryan have faced off at the division one level. Back in 2019, the Ryan’s Mavericks swept the Bulldogs at AMSOIL Arena.
“It was good to kind of get the first one out of the way a couple years ago. I didn’t like how the results ended up that weekend, and so I’ve heard about it from him a little bit, but yeah, it’s cool,” said Scott.
“I mean he’s worked hard to get where he’s at, and after the game, we’ll be beaking each other or just having the dad-son moment like we did last time, you know like when we played here, at the end of the game I gave him a hug, you know thought he played good. Hopefully, it’ll be with us winning games, and not losing games.”
They’ll play on Thursday, December 30 in Mankato and then head back north to Duluth for the second game of the series on New Years Day.
