Duluth man jailed after chases in Grand Rapids, Hermantown

11:50 A.M. WEDNESDAY UPDATE: A Duluth man is in jail after leading authorities on two separate chases Tuesday night, one in Grand Rapids and the other in Hermantown.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, authorities spotted a vehicle they believed to be stolen around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Grand Rapids.

Authorities tried to stop the vehicle, but the 22-year-old driver fled.

Officers chased him, but eventually ended the pursuit.

A state trooper spotted the same vehicle involved in the Grand Rapids incident about an hour later on Highway 2 near Highway 33.

The driver of the vehicle fled again.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, troopers used stop sticks as the vehicle continued toward Hermantown.

Troopers eventually stopped chasing the vehicle.

A short time later, it crashed on Rose Road in Hermantown and the suspect ran from the scene.

Police spent the night searching for what they described at the time as an “armed and dangerous” suspect.

The 22-year-old was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m., but authorities did not say exactly where he was found.

State Patrol spokespeople say the suspect wasn’t hurt, but was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for evaluation and then to the St. Louis County jail.

Charges are expected to be filed.

10:30 P.M. UPDATE: Police say the suspect has been taken into custody.

More details are expected to be released Wednesday.

DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - A large police presence could be seen Tuesday evening near Midway Road and Rose Road in Hermantown.

An officer on scene told KBJR6 there was an armed man in the area, and the public was being asked to stay away.

Law enforcement and medical teams were staged at the nearby Station 3 Fire Department.

Hermantown Police Chief Jim Crace tells KBJR6 it started as a pursuit involving the State Patrol.

He said the occupant of the vehicle eventually fled on foot in Hermantown.

The State Patrol had an aircraft on the way to help find the suspect.

No word on how the pursuit began or who the suspect is.
