PEQUAYWAN LAKES, MN -- Deep in the woods northwest of Two Harbors sits the Pequaywan Inn.

On the outside, it looks like two buildings blending together to become one.

First came the Inn.

“That was established sometime in the 1930s. Sometime in the early 40s, this bar was added,” said Nicholas Alexander, new owner of the Pequaywan Inn.

For the Alexander brothers, it’s been a familiar stop. They’ve been vacationing in the area for decades.

“My brother and I, we had a family cabin up here for the last 50 years,” said Dean Alexander, new owner of the Pequaywan Inn.

“It’s a place that was familiar to me, that I’ve always had a little interest in,” said Nicholas Alexander.

This fall, they heard through the grapevine that the Inn might be for sale.

So they took a leap and put in an offer.

“We made contact with the former owner and everything obviously worked out for us,” said Nicholas Alexander.

They became the official new owners in early October.

Dean is semi-retired, but for Nicholas, this new business will require some juggling. He may be an innkeeper in Minnesota, but in Wisconsin, he holds a different title.

“In Superior, I’m the chief of police,” said Nicholas Alexander.

The Inn will be his post-police career, but he plans to balance both jobs for the near future.

He says telecommuting and having his weekends free allow him to run the Inn while also holding down his police job, but he’s got some help too.

“All the employees that were here stayed, and we have a wonderful staff,” said Dean Alexander.

They’ve got big plans for the Inn.

They’re renovating sections of the restaurant and bar and upgrading the outdoor areas.

They’re also bringing the six guest rooms at the Inn back to life.

For Nicholas, he’s building his future before moving on from the past.

“I look back at my career to date as being one that’s been very fulfilling and rewarding. As I near retirement age, I want to have something different and in time that’s what this place will allow me to do,” said Nicholas Alexander.
