DIY Christmas wreath sale aims to raise $10,000 for outdoor education additions
DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center near Duluth is selling DIY wreaths to raise money for an environmental classroom and more transportation.
The center is a partnership between UMD, Minnesota Power, and St. Louis County.
“We really want to reach folks that might not necessarily have the chance to be here, and a fundraising event like this allows us to reach some of those groups and provide some of those opportunities in ways we couldn’t before,” director of the learning center, Ryan Hueffmeier said.
The pick-up wreath kits consist of a metal wreath frame, balsam fir boughs, wire, accents, and a link to “how-to” video instructions that include suggestions on how to use leftover balsam scraps more wreath accents.
Hueffmeier said the center hopes to raise $10,000, to add a building and more transportation to their learning center.
An addition, UMD professor of Environmental and Outdoor Education, Ken Gilbertson, said the new center will help learners of all kinds.
“It’s a stronger learning experience and it’s better to have hands-on experimental learning,” Gilbertson said.
Gilbertson said a building is already sketched out and designed.
Gilbertson said it will most likely be located by Bear Paw Ski Trail, at the edge of Boulder Lake.
Learning center leaders said it’ll look similar to the Bagley classroom at UMD.
“Its success is outgrowing the existing building and that’s why we need a new one,” Gilbertson said.
Learning center leaders said they hope families can enjoy some holiday cheer one balsam bough at a time, while they raise money to support their unique educational vision.
“It has the opportunity to provide students, adults, people just with hands-on opportunities of what a working forest looks like. And one of the things we’re looking at and what we’re doing is we’re using this event to showcase sustainable forestry,” Hueffmeier said.
