DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - Some may say defense wins championships, and this past Saturday, the Bulldog football team proved what dominant defensive play produces. Following a five-interception day in a stunning victory over no.17 Augustana, a game like that not only keeps the Dogs in the playoff picture, but it also keeps a conference championship on the horizon.

Saturday’s defeat was big thanks to senior defensive back and NSIC defensive player of the week Michael Kirkendoll. Kirkendoll tallied two picks and eight total tackles. Big Bulldog credits were also given to Brad Dati, who put up a team-high of a dozen tackles on the afternoon for the second straight week.

Offensively Garrett Olson led the pack again, going 11-18 for 171 yards with three touchdowns and registered 76 rushing yards. To propel past Northern this weekend, the Dogs say they remain level-headed to ensure that they take their train to the next level.

“The game plan was really to stay who we were; going back to that 2018 defense is getting back to normally what we were in the secondary. We created a lot of turnovers because of our front line. Of course, our front seven is amazing. They were getting pressure on him every snap, so I think that just created a lot of turnovers and made it a lot easier for us in the back end,” said Kirkendoll.

“With that win, we’ve put ourselves in a position to potentially be in the national playoffs, which ultimately is a goal for our program. Last weekend we felt a lot of pressure, the need to win; we knew it was a win or go home. This weekend it’s only built a little bit more against a good Northern State team,” said Wiese.

Win or go home is still the name of the game ahead of UMD’s home finale with Northern State. Saturday also marks Senior Day, where UMD’s seniors will be honored on their last home game at Malosky Stadium. Kick-off is at 1:05 pm.
