UWS Headed to NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament
DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - This past weekend across the bridge, history was made on the soccer field. UW-Superior clinched their first-ever UMAC title, and today they found out even better news; UWS is going to the big dance.
The 18-3-1 Lady Yellowjackets will face top-seeded St. Catherine’s in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday in St. Paul. The Wildcats also clinched their conference title in the MIAC and come into gameplay at 14-3-1 overall. While the Jackets have been buzzing through a program record, a 17 game winning streak. This also marks their first NCAA bid in their 29-year history among the program.
“We have taken some massive strides over the last few years, and this group of women really deserves an opportunity. They’ve worked hard, they’ve been dedicated, they’ve been vigilant, and they deserve the opportunity,” said DeGroot.
“Going at them and making sure we are ready because like this is it for us. We don’t get a next year, so I think with that, we are like the driving passion forces and are ready to go because I don’t have a lot left, so have to not leave anything out there,” said Schussman.
Survive and advance is the name of the game here. The winner of the four-team regional will play in the sectional round November 19-21st.
