SUPERIOR, WI (KBJR) - It was an odd season, but the UW-Superior men’s hockey team got the job done, and won a WIAC championship in the pandemic-stricken 2020-21 season.

This fall, they return 21 letter-winners including an experienced group of forwards in pursuit of another. Headlining returners include senior forwards Chad Lopez and Artur Terchiyev, and junior defenseman Dylan Johnson.

“It was kind of in our first meeting, I don’t care what we did last year. That was last year, this year is a new year, we still have to go through 25 games. The process remains the same, the day-to-day structure still remains the same,” said head coach Rich McKenna.

Lopez, Terchiyev, and Johnson were all named to their 2020-21 all-conference team. This season, UWS was picked to finish fourth in the WIAC.

“We feel pretty good. Kind of disappointed about being 4th in the WIAC rankings, and we’re trying to prove a lot of people wrong. But it’s just another day and we’ve got to get after it, so we’re looking to improve on last year,” said Johnson.

The Yellowjackets open their season on Saturday, October 30 at St. Scholastica. For their full schedule, click here.
