3 candidates race for Duluth City Council at-large seat
DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - Duluth’s General Election is Tuesday.
A closely-watched race on the ballot is two open at-large seats on the Duluth City Council.
Three candidates are running: Terese Tomanek, Joe Macor, and Azrin Awal.
The city council appointed Tomanek to fill an open at-large seat last year.
The business owner and chaplain wants to expand affordable housing, monitor budgets, and help in pandemic recovery.
“I think I bring that wisdom of being a senior citizen, having been involved in business, and in the non-profit sector,” Tomanek said. “I’ve been involved with my church and Girl Scouts. I was on the Human Rights Commission when we passed the ordinance, and so I think there’s that wisdom.”
Macor’s family has lived in Duluth for generations.
The business owner and youth sports coach wants to improve the city’s infrastructure, support public safety departments, and prioritize economic development.
“Whether it’s owning a business or involved in the community, involved with different families with the Denfeld Junior Football League, or the football conference, or the Irving Community Club which serves to really help a lot of individuals and families throughout the community,” Macor said.
Awal moved to the city to attend college at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
She works as an advocate serving at-risk youth experiencing homelessness and wants to improve transportation access, affordable housing, racial justice, and the environment.
“I bring my own personal struggles and knowing what the working class has to go through, knowing what individuals who are disenfranchised by the system or who can’t access all of Duluth without a vehicle has to go through, I bring that perspective,” Awal said.
If elected, all three candidates hope to use their voices to make Duluth a better place.
