DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - YMCA’s across Duluth are celebrating the success of afterschool programming at several locations tonight.

In partnership with the Duluth Public Schools afterschool program, Key-Zone the organizations reflect on the remarkable work being done by students and afterschool staff to move forward from the pandemic.

Lights On Afterschool is a country-wide celebration highlighting the vital work from afterschool programs to help children stay busy after the bell rings.

With many students now back inside schools this fall, the demand for afterschool programs is growing.

Data from a recent America After 3PM report shows that 325,000 Minnesota children would join an afterschool program if one were available to them.

Executive Director of the Community Services Branch at the YMCA, Melissa Fanning, says these programs are crucial for children who don’t have home supervision after school.

“There’s no reason that learning should stop at 3 p.m., particularly if the alternative is unsupervised time in front of a television set, or any of the dangerous or unhealthy behaviors that can ensnare children in the afternoons,” Fanning said.
