Man in coma after cigarette dispute has long road to recovery

We're learning more about the incident that left a man in a coma after a dispute over a cigarette outside a west Duluth bar.

Earlier Wednesday, 22-year-old Chazz Smith was charged with first-degree assault in connection with the incident that happened on Sunday.

Smith told police he struck the victim in self-defense at Mr. D's bar.
 

According to witnesses and surveillance video, Smith and the victim who according to a gofundme website is 27-year-old Jordan Johnson got into a fist fight over a cigarette. 


The criminal complaint states that the Johnson struck Smith in the head first but investigators say Smith provoked the fight and didn't back off.


when Smith hit Johnson in the head Johnson collapsed.


Investigators say Smith then straddled him and punched him 5 more times in the head. According to police, after seven seconds the fight was broken up.


According to the gofundme site, Johnson has a long road to recovery.


He remains in a coma and it's unclear what kind of recovery he might face.
