BOUNDARY WATERS CANOE AREA, MN -

One man is dead after his canoe capsized on a lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Tuesday.

Niles Richard Schulz, 75, of Minneapolis was paddling a canoe on Sawbill Lake, located 25 miles north of Tofte, Minnesota when the canoe overturned and Schulz went underwater.

Schulz was camping with two other adults and two children at the time. One member of his party called 911 and Beaver Aircraft, Cook County Sheriff's Office and Cook County Search & Rescue responded.

Around 5:30 pm, Schulz' body was recovered from the water by responders and transferred to North Shore Health Hospital in Grand Marais.

An autopsy will be completed. Authorities say Schulz was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
