Traffic advisory issued for Duluth on Friday, Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Lots of foot traffic is the cause of the latest traffic advisory from the Duluth Police Department.

Officials say the amount of people participating in the races related to Grandma's Marathon in the Canal Park and Bayfront areas will cause multiple detours in those areas.

Starting at noon on Friday, Canal Park Drive from Railroad Street to Buchanan Street will be closed in order to finish setup for the finish line.

On Friday, Harbor Drive behind the DECC will be closed at 3 p.m., and all traffic will be diverted off portions of Railroad Street at 5:30 for the William A. Irvin 5k race.

Anyone who parks in "No Parking" areas on Railroad Street, Lake Place Drive and Harbor Drive will be ticketed and towed.

Delays will also last for about an hour starting at 5:30 due to the closure on Railroad Street from Harbor Drive, west to Pier B.

Southbound traffic on 5th Avenue West will be allowed to Railroad Street in order to access the DECC parking lot.

Harbor Drive will also be closed to traffic behind the DECC at this time.

Anyone wishing to access the Aquarium or the DECC will have limited options:

DECC: All access will be through the North Gate on Railroad Street from Lake Avenue or 5th Avenue West

Aquarium parking lot: There won't be access to the aquarium from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Northbound traffic on I-35 taking the 5th Avenue West exit will be able to drive straight to Lake Avenue to access the DECC lot, or turn right onto 5th

Avenue West to access either the DECC lot, or the Aquarium lot.

All traffic is expected to return to normal by 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

On Saturday, more road closures will begin at 4 a.m., starting with Scenic Highway 61 between McQuade Road and Ryan Road.

At 4:15, the rest of Scenic 61 along Lake Superior between Duluth and Two Harbors will close, as well as Lakewood, Homestead, Ryan, and McQuade Roads between the Expressway and the Scenic Highway.

Harbor Drive will only be accessible to buses at 4:30 a.m. between the DECC East Gate to the Aquarium, and will close to all traffic at 5:45.

All Avenues leading to London Road will be closed at 5 a.m., with London Road closing to traffic at 5:45 a.m.

Also closing at 5:45 a.m. are Superior Street from 12th Avenue East to 3rd Avenue East, Michigan Street from 4th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West, and Commerce Street/Railroad Street, Lake Place Drive and Canal Park.

Northbound traffic on I-35 will be sent up Mesaba Avenue to 2nd Street at 5:45 a.m.

The following detours will be in place starting at 5:45 Saturday morning:

Eastbound traffic: Use 2nd Street from Mesaba Avenue to 21st Avenue East, then head south to Superior Street before heading east.

Westbound traffic will use Superior Street from the Highway 61 Expressway to 21st Avenue East, head north onto 21st Avenue East, and then head west on 3rd Street to Mesaba Avenue.
Northbound I-35 will close from Mesaba Avenue to 26th Avenue East at 5:45, while the southbound lanes from 21st and 26th Avenue East closing at 4:30.

All roads closed for the race will re-open by 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

  • There will be no parking allowed anywhere on the race course, and any violators will be towed.
  • Anyone wishing to attend events in Canal Park is encouraged to park at the Bayfront park lots, the DECC, or the Aquarium lot.
  • Due to 5th Avenue West being closed at Superior Street, lots at the DECC, Bayfront, and Aquarium will only be accessible from Garfield Avenue to Railroad Street from 5:45 a.m. on Saturday until the end of the Marathon.
  • In addition, the only way motorists will be able to reach Park Point and the Canal Park area will be on Lake Avenue from Superior Street on Saturday, during the Marathon. Delays should be expected both Friday evening and during the day on Saturday.
  • Also new is available street and ramp parking on Superior street from 3rd Avenue East to 3rd Avenue West.
  • Michigan Street and sidewalks will be closed to traffic during the marathon from 4th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West.
