Duluth teacher accused of sexual misconduct denied bail request

DULUTH, MN -

The Duluth teacher accused of felony sexual conduct with a former student was back in court Tuesday morning.

Karla Winterfeld does not have legal representation at this point in time.

In court Tuesday, she requested her $100,000 bail be reduced to $50,000. Winterfeld says she is not a flight risk, and her incarceration was limiting her ability to find an attorney.

The judge denied the request.

According to court documents, Winterfeld confessed to having sex in her home with a 15-year-old former student between May 4th and May 19th of this year.

Evidence includes a recording of multiple sexual acts between the two, photographs, and text messages found on both parties' phones.

She's due back in court July 3rd.

In special meeting held Tuesday, the Duluth School Board voted to put Winterfeld on unpaid administrative leave pending "final disciplinary outcomes up to and including termination."
