Grandma's Marathon works to reduce carbon footprint during race

Posted: Updated:

There is a new effort to take out the trash is underway during this year's Grandma's Marathon.

On a day where thousands of people watch even more people running, there's sure to be a good amount of waste.

That's why the Grandma's Crew is starting a zero waste initiative where several local organizations will come together to try and make that carbon footprint as small as possible.

Officials say donating used shoes, composting all food waste and cleaner transportation for runners are just a few strategies.

"If we have a situation where we're planning the tiniest aspect, like can we make this more eco-friendly, can we enhance this, how can we make this better for the environment and that goes for planning everything and that and not just planning the actual marathon but even just how our office functions as well."

If you would like to help go green, Grandma's Marathon organizers suggest carpooling to the event, using reusable bottles for water or volunteering with green teams.
