Blake Biondi scored three goals, including the eventual game-winner, on Wednesday night to lift the No. 1 Hermantown boys' hockey team to a 4-2 win over Monticello-Maple Lake in the MSHSL Class A quarterfinals at the Xcel Energy Center.
Biondi opened the scoring just 2:47 into the first period, and he then added markers in both the second and third periods. His second goal made it 3-0 Hermantown, and his third sealed the win late in the game after Monticello had rallied to make it 3-2.
Jacob Herter scored Hermantown's second goal midway through the first period, and he finished with a goal and an assist. Tyler Watkins, who plays on a line with Biondi and Herter, tallied two assists in the winning effort.
Matt Miller scored both goals for Monticello, which lost to Hermantown in double overtime in last year's state championship game. The goals came 2:17 apart in the second period and made it a 3-2 game at the time.
Cole Manahan made 24 saves in the winning effort for the Hawks.
Hermantown now advances to play either Thief River Falls or Alexandria in the state semifinals, with the game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.
