Nearly $10 million awarded to Koochiching County for sewer upgrades, protection of water in Voyageurs

Posted: Updated:

Waters in Voyageurs National Park will be better protected following the completion of an estimated $19.5 million sewer upgrade in Koochiching County.

Nearly $10 million in grants have been awarded by the Minnesota Public Facilities Authority in order to build a new sanitary sewer collection system, as well as extend sewer service in the area.

The service will be extended to roughly 162 neighbors and eight resorts along Highway 11 from Tilson's Creek to Sha Sha Point, which is east of International Falls.

Authorities say the project will be funded by the PFA grant, as well as a $1.8 million grant from the MPCA, and a $4.4 million grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In addition, there will be $3.5 million in local debt issuance to help fund the project.

The funding was approved for the project in the 2014 and 2017 bonding bills.
