Hudson defends state hockey title with win over Eau Claire Memorial

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Fittingly, the WIAA state hockey championship game hosted the top two-seeded teams heading into the tournament.

And the top-seeded Hudson Raiders ended the tournament where they began to defend their state title with a 7-1 win over second-seed Eau Claire Memorial, March 3, 2018 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Hudson was on the score board first with an unassisted goal by Cole Danielson at the 5:48 mark of the first period.

Eau Claire Memorial answered quickly at the 7:30 mark with a goal by Max Savaloja on an assist by Joe Free.

But Hudson came back to finish the first-period scoring with a goal by Ben Lundeen on a Peyton Hanson assist to go up 2-1.

Hudson came out hot in the second period with Cole Hudson's second score of the game off assists by Jack Flattum and  Peyton Hanson a little over a minute into the period.

Peyton Hanson then had a score of his own that held up under review, with an assist from Ben Lundeen at the 12:31 mark.

The Raiders added one more goal with 21 seconds left in the second by Joe Martin with assists by Dylan Carr and Rece Lila to end the period 5-1

Cole Danielson opened up the third period with his third score of the game at the 2:48 mark with assists from Peyton Hanson and Jordan Halverson to push the score to 6-1.

Jack Flattum closed out the scoring with an assists from Aaron Squires and Bennett Schrank to give the Raiders a 7-1 lead.

Hudson now was won four state titles. The first came in 2001, and the second followed in 2004. They also advanced to the championship final in 2016 and finished runner-up.

Eau Claire Memorial qualified for the 18th time and for the 11th time in the last 12 years, only absent during that span in 2009. The Old Abes won their two state championships in 2008 and 2013.
