Police urge parents to talk with kids after alleged spoofing incident

HERMANTOWN, MN -

The Hermantown Police Department is urging parents to be cautious after an alleged "spoofing" incident.

Police say they were called to a business along Arrowhead Road Tuesday night after a suspicious phone call to a young girl.

Officers say the girl was dropped off by her parents for athletic lessons and missed a call from a number unfamiliar to her.

The girl answered a second call and the caller allegedly said she needed to come outside.

Police say the caller claimed he was there to pick her up and take her brother to hockey practice.

Police believe the call likely came from an out of state number, using a spoofing application to mask the real number.

Police urge parents to have conversations with their children about safety and what to do in a situation like this.

The case remains under investigation.
