University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) sophomore goaltender Hunter Shepard and freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich have been named National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) players of the week, it was announced on Monday.
Shepard is the league's goaltender of the week for a second straight time. The Cohasset, Minn. native stopped 41 of 42 shots this past weekend in a road sweep of Western Michigan, and his Friday night shutout was his sixth of this season to set a new program record.
A Saturday night goal for the Broncos snapped a scoreless streak of 222:00 for Shepard, who also recorded his first collegiate assist in Friday night's win.
Perunovich, meanwhile, was named the league's rookie of the week after scoring a goal and adding three assists against Western Michigan. That's the fifth weekly honor of the season for the Hibbing, Minn. native, who had twice before been the rookie and defenseman of the week.
UMD is now (18-13-3) overall and will close the regular season this weekend at home against Nebraska-Omaha.
