Hermantown cruises, Greenway surges to Section 7A semifinal wins

Posted: Updated:

Top-seeded Hermantown cruised to a 6-0 win over International Falls, and No. 2 seed Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin surged past No. 3 seed Virginia/MI-B 5-1 in the Section 7A boys' hockey semifinals at AMSOIL Arena on Friday night.

Hermantown got two-goal performances from both Tyler Watkins and Jacob Herter, leading the Hawks to their fifth consecutive Section 7A final. International falls ends the 2017-18 season at (13-12-1) overall.

Virginia/MI-B, meanwhile, led 1-0 after the first period thanks to a goal from Cade Moreland, but Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin dominated the final two frames.

The Raiders, searching for their first MSHSL Class A state tournament appearance since 2001, tied the game early in the second period with a goal from Ben Troumbly. Nikolai Rajala then scored back-to-back goals later in the period to help the Raiders stake out to a 3-1 lead.

The Blue Devils end the season at (16-10-1).

In a rematch of last season's title game, Hermantown (19-6-2) will now face Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin (20-7-0) in the Section 7A championship on Wednesday, February 28 at AMSOIL Arena. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
