The Northland has experienced frigid temperatures in recent weeks, but officials are warning the Apostle Islands Ice Caves are still inaccessible.
Ice Rescue Team members have been testing the ice and say conditions on the lake remain poor.
So far, the ice and slush has blown into shore in pieces, creating "pack" ice that is weak and jagged.
These conditions make it difficult to walk and nearly impossible to snowmobile on the lake.
However, experts say this early ice typically gets replaced by smoother, higher quality ice, which is what happened the last time the ice caves were open in 2015.
Experts say the earliest the ice caves would open would be the end of the month.
