Mayor Emily Larson is joining politicians from around the state of Minnesota who are issuing statements following Al Franken's announcement of his resignation.
Franken made the announcement Thursday while on the Senate floor in Washington, D.C.
"Senator Franken is someone I've gotten to know well in recent years. I have admired a lot about him and I have appreciated his efforts in regards to net neutrality, taxes, judicial appointments and other key areas. He has wonderful staff who have worked hard for Duluth and Minnesota, and I'm sure today is a difficult one for them.
We are living in an important time, where women are feeling safe and supported to tell their stories; to lift their voices, and one another, towards a more just and equitable future in our country, state and community. I believe women, I believe in women and I believe Senator Franken made the right choice for Minnesota by resigning.
I have faith that Governor Dayton will make an informed and deeply thoughtful choice about who to appoint and that he will take into account the needs and values of Minnesotans while he does so. I hope he chooses someone who will not just fulfill the next year but also commit to a run for 2018. "
