As the nation struggles to get ahead of the ongoing opioid crisis, doctors in Duluth are searching for solutions.
At Saint Luke's Hospital Wednesday, medical experts hosted a conference on the ethics of pain management.
The goal of the conference was to gain insight into some of the ethical dilemmas medical providers deal with when treating patients with signs of opioid addiction.
"I hope that people recognize the dangers associated with the use of opiods. They're an important tool for the treatment of pain, but they have to be used in a very particular way to try and protect patients from potential harm," says Nick Vandeelen, director at St. Luke's.
Saint Louis County commissioners recently approved a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical companies that make synthetic opioids in an effort to recover the social and public costs of this epidemic.
