The Commander of the 148th Fighter Wing in the Minnesota Air National Guard passed off command of his unit Sunday afternoon.
Col. Jon Safstrom took his final flight in an F16 Fighting Falcon on Tuesday.
A change of command ceremony was held Sunday at the DECC as Safstrom will take over as the Assistant Adjutant General-Air with the Minnesota National Guard and was promoted to Brigadier General.
During the ceremony, Safstrom was honored for his service while commanding the 148th Fighter Wing.
Gen. Safstrom says, "I will be working at the Minnesota Guard Joint Force Headquarters down in St. Paul right by the veterans service building by the capital, I still will live in Duluth, I am a traditional guardsman, that means one weekend a month, several weeks a year then multiple days, so I will be traveling back and forth to do my job at different time in the cities."
Gen. Safstrom began his military career in the Navy in 1988, flying F/A-18s aboard the USS Kitty Hawk.
