The Duluth Red Cross is sending thousands of holiday greeting cards to area service members and veterans.
It's part of the Holiday Mail for Heroes initiative that started 15 years ago. Currently, Red Cross volunteers are sorting through piles and piles of donated greeting cards, from people who want to give their well wishes to our active and retired military.
The executive director of the Duluth Red Cross, Dan Williams. says one out of every ten cards they send out goes to someone who is experiencing difficulty in their life.
"We know that maybe there's 100 [out of every 1,000 we send] that are going to someone who's really going through a hard time - they're having challenges, they're having struggles, they don't have a great support system, and we know that hundred aren't going to raise their hand and say 'I need help', all the time. So, it's worth 100% of the effort to do this for the 10% that are really going to people who it makes a drastic difference around their holiday season," said Williams.
The Red Cross is hoping to send more than 15,000 cards to 4,000 service members and veterans in our region.
