The Merrill Thompson Classic came at the right time for the St. Scholastica men's basketball team. After starting the season 0-3, the Saints won both their games this weekend at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior, capped off with a 92-70 defeat of Luther College on Sunday.

Brandon Newman continued his double-figure scoring binge by scoring a game-high 23 points. Duluth, Minn. native Sam Thompson scored 14 points while Jarod Wilken added 11.

Despite the final score, the game was quite close in the first half. The Saints and Norse were tied at 40 at halftime, but St. Scholastica pulled away behind 60 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes.

St. Scholastica is now (2-3) overall and next will host UW-Eau Claire on Thursday, November 30.
