Nick Swaney returned from injury to score a goal and Hunter Shepard made a season-high 33 saves to lift the No. 16 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men's hockey team to 3-1 win over No. 8 Minnesota State-Mankato on Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.
After missing the previous six games with an upper body injury, Swaney quickly reacclimated himself by scoring his third goal of the season eight minutes into the first period.
Joey Anderson also returned from injury and assisted on Peter Krieger's fourth goal of the season, which made it 2-0 UMD with 10 seconds left in the first period.
The Mavericks scored early in the second period, forcing the Bulldogs to cling to a 2-1 lead until Riley Tufte put the game away with his team-leading sixth goal of the season with under two minutes left in regulation.
UMD was outshot by MSU-Mankato 34-26 as Shepard earned the win with his 33-save effort in net.
The Bulldogs are now (7-6-2) overall and will next host NCHC rival Denver on December 1-2.
