It turned out to be quite the weekend for the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women's hockey team. A night after defeating No. 2 Colgate University, the Bulldogs, thanks to a late goal from Emma Yanko, defeated Vermont University 2-1 in the Windjammer Classic championship at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vermont.
In its first-ever meeting with Vermont, UMD jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following Naomi Rogge's team-leading ninth goal of the season eight minutes into the first period.
After a scoreless second period, the Catamounts scored the equalizer goal halfway through the third period. With 1:36 remaining on the clock, however, Yanko tipped in her fourth goal of the season, the game-winner to hand the Bulldogs the tournament trophy.
Overall, Vermont outshot UMD 26-24. Jessica Convery made 25 saves, earning her fourth consecutive win.
The Bulldogs are now (9-8-0) overall and will return to WCHA play on the road against Wisconsin on December 1-2.
