U.S. Highway 2 and State Highway 13 has been declared impassable along the Chequamegon Bayfront.
The Ashland County Sheriff's Office says the Highway is closed between Sanborn Avenue and State Highway 13 North due to flooding and lake debris.
Anyone traveling in the area must use State Highway 137 alternate route.
According to Ashland police the closure is to protect drivers as crews are unable to assess road conditions and there may be moving water underneath the highway.
Conditions worsened from Friday morning into the afternoon.
"We can't keep Highway 2 clean because they plowed it off once already and then the waves just knock it right back in the road," Ashland Police Sgt. Michelle Tutor said.
The closure will remain in effect until further notice.
According to the National Weather Service, the area is under a Lakeshore Flood Warning, which is in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
In addition, the Madeline Island Ferry has canceled all trips for Friday.
