Parkey Mackay capped off an exciting season opener with a goal 105 seconds into overtime to lift the No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men's hockey team to a 4-3 win over No. 3 Minnesota in round one of the Ice Breaker Tournament at AMSOIL Arena on Friday.
The Bulldogs struck first with the first collegiate goal from Mikey Anderson on a power play eight minutes into the game. The Gophers responded with goals from Tommy Novak and Scott Reedy in the second period to take the lead.
Riley Tufte began his sophomore campaign with a bang, netting a power play goal 23 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 2-2. The Gophers again had a response from Jack Ramsey, but so did UMD as Joey Anderson scored three minutes into the third period to tie the game.
Less than two minutes into overtime, Parkey Mackay scored off a rebound to send UMD home with bragging rights and its first win of the 2017-18 season.
Overall, UMD outshout Minnesota 44-21. Hunter Shepard made his second collegiate start in net, making 18 saves, which included eight in the third period.
The Bulldogs are now (1-0-0) and will face Michigan Tech in the Ice Breaker Tournament championship tomorrow at 7:37 p.m.
