The No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women's hockey team fired 31 total shots on goal in the first and second periods on Saturday, but failed to cash in on any. That changed in the third period when the Bulldogs scored three times to defeat Penn State University 3-0 for the series sweep at AMSOIL Arena.
Jalyn Elmes got the scoring started eight minutes into the third period on a power play goal, her second goal in two games. In just her second collegiate game, Hibbing, Minn. native Mallorie Iozzo made it a 2-0 game at the 13-minute mark with her first goal as a Bulldog. Sydney Brodt then capped off the third period with a goal at the17-minute mark.
Brodt and Katerina Mrazova, who assisted on two goals, each came away with two points in the winning effort.
Overall, UMD outshot Penn State 41-12. In two games with the Bulldogs, goaltender Jessica Convery has pitched two shutouts and saved 34 shots.
UMD is now (2-0-0) and next has a four-game road trip, starting with a Thursday-Friday series at Boston College on October 5-6.
