The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has spoken: they will not be extending the public comment period for two draft dam safety permits for the planned PolyMet copper-nickel mine in northeastern Minnesota.
In a press release, DNR spokespeople say the 30-day comment period will end on its originally scheduled date of October 16th.
Environmental groups were asking the DNR to give the public more time to comment on the draft dam safety permits. Those groups include WaterLegacy, the Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Cloquet Valley State Forest, and the Izaak Walton League.
The groups say 30 days isn't long enough to submit adequate responses, given the importance of the permits to the project, and the complexity of the issues involved.
