ST. PAUL, MN -

Former University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) goaltender Alex Stalock has been named the primary backup for the Minnesota Wild, the team announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Stalock, who played most of last season with Minnesota's AHL affiliate, was in a highly public battle with Niklas Svedberg this preseason for the right to backup starter Devan Dubnyk.

The former UMD All-American was (23-17-1) with a 2.28 goals against average last season with the Iowa Wild, and he also went (1-1-0) in his two starts with the NHL club.

Minnesota opens the 2017-18 regular season Oct. 5 at Detroit.
