Ceremonies to honor the late Marine Sgt. James Hubert began Thursday as his alma mater honored his memory.
Hubert graduated Denfeld in 1939 and when the alumni association heard his story, they organized a ceremony to honor his service with an honorary diploma.
Denfeld principal Tonya Sconiers presented the diploma and an honor pin to his sister, Mary Hagen in his memory and says she's proud to have Hubert as a part of the school's history and community.
"It's not only a special place but it's a special community and as such we are honored and we were blessed to have Mr. Hubert here and you are his legacy," Sconiers said.
After the ceremony, his family climbed the Denfeld tower to write his name, a tradition meant to immortalize Denfeld graduates and alumni.
