Laurentian Energy Authority has entered the final stages of a contract buyout from Xcel.
The move would allow Xcel Energy to pay to get out of its power purchase agreement with LEA.
LEA's general manager tells us both the Hibbing and Virginia Public Utilities Commissions voted to approve the contract buyout.
This means the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission will have a hearing to discuss whether the state commission will approve the contract buyout.
A buyout would allow the commissions to choose the fuel they want to burn.
