UPDATE: Police determine East Hillside shooting was self-inflicted

An update now to a story we first brought you last week surrounding a shooting in Duluth's East Hillside.

Police say the the 25-year-old suspect walked into Essentia Health St. Mary's hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his thigh. 

Police have determined that the gunshot was self-inflicted.

The incident happened on the 600 Block of East Fourth Street in Duluth.



One man is hurt and another man was detained in the area of a shooting in Duluth's East Hillside neighborhood.

Police have identified the man who suffered a gunshot wound as Douglas Antonio Ladd, 25.

According to police, Ladd walked into St. Mary's Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his upper leg just before 6 p.m. on Thursday after reports of a shooting on the 600 block of East 4th Street.

Police say his injuries are non-life threatening.

No one has been arrested in the shooting, and police say they don't believe the public is in danger.

It is still unclear as to how the shooting unfolded, or what let do it.

Police say they couldn't find the gun on scene, and are still looking for it. 

Police say they connected the shooting to the area based on reports from the victim and calls from potential witnesses. Once on scene, police say they arrested one man.

"It may have been in the grass... [of] which we did an article search with a dog," said Lt. Bob Shene, with the Duluth Police Department, "It may have been picked up by somebody and gone into one of these [nearby] apartments. We just don't know. So, that's what we've been trying to do, figure out how the person got shot in the leg."

Police cleared the scene shortly after 7 p.m.
