Battling fatigue and humidity, Jepkurgat wins first-ever Grandma's Marathon

Posted: Updated:

Helen Jepkurgat was sprawled against a wall late Saturday morning, having just completed and won her first-ever Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minn.

Asked how she felt when she hit the home stretch, Jepkurgat smiled wide.

"Oh, I was so tired," she said, laughing.

Jepkurgat said the heat and humidity played a part in her time, but she blew away the competition with a mark of 2:32:09 to win her first-ever Grandma's Marathon.

"The course was good, but the weather was humid," she said. "I definitely could have run faster."

The result wasn't really in question, but in the end the runner-up was less than a half-minute behind. Askale Merachi finished in 2:32:25.

Below are listed the top five finishers for the 2017 Grandma's Marathon.

1. Helen Jepkurgat (Grand Prairie, TX) --- 2:32:09

2. Askale Merachi (Floral Park, NY) --- 2:32:25

3. Serkalem Abrha (Albuquerque, NM) --- 2:34:08

4. Jane Kiibi (Auburn, CA) --- 2:34:47
