A 16-year-old Ashland High School student is dead and two other students suffered minor injuries when the teen's vehicle hit a school bus from behind early this morning.
All 18 students on the bus were taken to Ashland Memorial Medical Center for observation.
According to the Ashland County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened at 7:45 a.m on State Highway 112, two miles south of Ashland.
A preliminary investigation determined that a Lakeshore bus was traveling Northbound on STH 112 and was slowing to make a left hand turn when it was struck from behind by the 16-year-old.
The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ashland County Coroner. The two injured students were treated and released.
The Superintendent for Ashland schools, Keith Hilt, says the school family is trying to cope with the tragic situation.
"We're still processing. [It's] very painful to lose a student - certainly our hearts go out to the, the family. Right now we're just trying to take care of the students and the staff to make sure they're all okay before they leave for the weekend." Said Ashland Superintendent Keith Hilts.
Multiple crews were assisting on the scene.
