Veterans Committee commits to finding vandals - "I take it as an insult"

Posted: Updated:

Trees at the Ely Veterans Area Memorial were cut and broken recently in a rash of vandalism. The Veterans Committee is dedicated to finding those responsible for the damage.

The Committee says there has already been up to $2,000 pledged for a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever is responsible.

They say they would also like to set up security cameras overlooking the memorial.

One business has already offered to provide free labor to install the security cameras.

"You expect things to happen, but that was a deliberate act. I take it as an insult to our veterans - past and present. Whether that was the purpose of it or not, I don't know, but it made a lot of folks in town irate about it. I've had people hand me checks in the street to replace the trees," Chairman for Ely Area Veterans Memorial, Richard Zahn, said.

The Veterans Committee would like to thank Bailey Nurseries out of New Hope, Minn., which donated 15 trees to replace the five that were destroyed.

The donated trees are flowering red, pink and white crab trees which will be planted within the next two days.
