Wednesday morning Birkie update

Posted: Updated:

Race officials have put out another update for anyone competing in the Birkebeiner  race this weekend.

According to officials, temperatures are above freezing in the area, however there are some puddles on the trail.

Trail crews are siphoning off water and repairing portions of the trail as needed.

Temperatures expected to be above freezing for the next day before any possible relief may arrive.

If below freezing temperatures and snow arrive, the following scenarios may occur on the Birkie Trail north of Highway OO east of Seeley

  • With some new snow remaining on the trails from the American Birkebeiner Trailhead to the OO Trailhead (at Highway OO), Birkie staff are monitoring trail conditions.  With hopes of measurable snow on Friday, there is a slim chance that a one-way, timed race could be held (American Birkebeiner, Kortelopet and Prince Haakon races).
  • If there is enough snow and conditions are capable to allow over 10,000 participants to safely ski, however unsafe for a competitive race, there is a possibility of an untimed, open track, looped-event on the Birkie Trail (north of OO) for the American Birkebeiner, Kortelopet and Prince Haakon events.
