Parents of missing Brookston man hope to find answers through search

Posted: Updated:

Brookston, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- A search for 34-year-old Joseph Zak is set for Tuesday in Brookston.

On December 7, Zak was reported missing from his group home.

"Almost immediately after the group home started searching for him, we were notified," said Marleen Zak, Joseph's Mother.

Joseph has high functioning autisim and works at a Super One foods in Duluth in the bakery.

His parents say it's very much out of his character to just disappear.

"It was very, very much a surprise. We did not know him to be under any duress. He was very, just at a very high point in his life, he had really been quite happy," said Marleen.

After talking with the police, the Zaks decided to take matters into their own hands and organize a Facebook page with updates about their son.

They also started to organize a voluntary search party.

"That volunteer group is maybe 35 people, maybe up to 40 people now. Within that group the volunteers spread from Pine City where we live and Lake Vermilion where we live."

The St. Louis County Sheriff's office is the lead agency on this case and the rescue squad will be bringing dogs to help in the search.

The Zaks are just hoping to find some answers.

"Hoping, feeling you know, positively, hoping that we get some lead," said Jim Zak, Joseph's Father.

The search party will meet Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Country Corner store on Highway 2 in Brookston.

The Zaks estimate that there is about 100 acres of land that they would like to cover.
